It was 21st May 1991.   It was on that day that Rajiv Gandhi,  former Prime Minister of India,  was assassinated in a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur,  near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.   It was really a shocking news to us.   In radio and television,  we could hear the bhajans only.   We waited anxiously for the news time.   Chandrasekhar was the caretaker Prime Minister,  there was the President,  R. Venkataraman,  but - I felt like a helpless person.   It was assumed that LTTE ( Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ) was behind this act.   Dhanu was acted as human bomb.   I read all these things in the newspaper in uncle Daniel's house.   I didn't get the newspaper's every pages to read thoroughly as I did in my house in Kadayiruppu because there were many readers : - uncle Daniel's sisters, brother Mr Roy, then Rhymie and aunt Molly.
The cremation day was on 24th May 1991.  It was telecast live nationally and internationally.   He was cremated on the banks of Yamuna.  It is known as VeerBhumi.   Even uncle Daniel's old father,  Yohannan, who was partially deaf,  came and sat on a chair.   It was on that occasion that I did see Sonia Gandhi,  their çhildren Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.   I looked at the scene of preparing the funeral pyre, the co - operation of Amitabh Bachchan, and how Rahul and Priyanka prepared the funeral pyre.   In the newspaper,  I read that Priyanka is more courageous than Rahul and she resembles Indira Gandhi.   Another news was that Sonia Gandhi would become the next Prime Minister of India.   Reading that news, I  was shocked.   How could she become the Prime Minister of a country when her husband just passed away ?  That was my doubt.   Another question was that how could an Italian person become the Prime Minister of India.   Now,  when I write this,  I don't know how to express my state of mind.   After returning to my house,  I went to kochechi's house and requested to give me all the newspapers when I was not present in my house.   She gave me all the newspapers and reminded me that her children had taken a decision to keep all the newspapers from the death of Rajiv Gandhi and therefore,  I should be careful in handling those newspapers.   I agreed because I was sure that I would be very careful when I deal with the newspaper.
I think in the Loksabha elections 1991,  Indian National Congress could make a Government and P V Narasimha Rao became the Prime Minister of India.   During my Pre - Degree Course,  between 1989 to 1991 , many changes occurred in Kerala,  India and the world as a whole.   In Kerala,  on June 25, 1989,  'Kottayam' Town was declared as the first to achieve total literacy.   On October 5, 1989, Justice Fatima Beevi became the Supreme Court Judge.   She was the first woman judge in Supreme Court.   When I read this news,  I became proud of her.   On February 4th, 1990, 'Ernakulam' was declared as the first total literacy district in India.  On April 18,  Kerala was declared as the first total literate State in India.  While reading each of these news in the newspaper, I can't describe how much pleasure I experienced !
In the world,  the Gorbachev led Soviet Union faced a problem.   Gorbachev's decision to allow elections with a multy party system and create a presidency for the country,  finally ended in the collapse of Soviet Union .  As a result,  the Cold War between USA & USSR ended.   On November 1989, thousands of Germans gathered and brought down the Berlin Wall.   In 1990,  Iraq, which was under Saddam Hussein,  invaded Kuwait.   The U N couldn't stop it and the U S attacked Iraq.   I think it was on that occasion that many people from India especially from Kerala , returned to our country.   I remember one student joined our hostel in Ist year Pre - Degree class , whose family was returned from a Gulf country.
One thing I'm sure.   At that time,  I was anxious about the future of the world.   The incidents I have mentioned above - each of them had great influence upon me.   I was totally upset about my exam results as well as the future of human race.
